Artistic Director Stephen Page has been awarded the Red Ochre Award at Australia Council for the Arts' 2022 First Nations Arts Awards.
The prestigious Red Ochre Award was established by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Arts Board in 1993 to pay tribute to a senior Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person for their outstanding lifetime achievement in the arts and their contribution to the recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts, both nationally and internationally.
Stephen is one of Australia's most respected contemporary First Nations leaders who has dedicated his life to establishing a powerful platform and strong voice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The Red Ochre Award recognises his enormous contribution to our artistic landscape and his unrelenting commitment to bring First Nations culture to the forefront of our society.
On behalf of the Board, Bangarra Dance Theatre Chair, Phillipa McDermott congratulated Stephen, "He has done so much for the arts and this nation. Stephen is a national treasure. We are thrilled that his many incredible achievements and unfailing dedication to bringing cultures together through art has been acknowledged in this way."
We also congratulate Destiny Deacon on being recognised as the female recipient of this year's award.
