WHAT IS REKINDLING?
Bangarra couldn’t be more proud of all that its Youth Program, Rekindling, has achieved since its inception in 2013.
Celebrating the core values of creativity, community, and cultural identity, Rekindling inspires pride, kinship, positive life choices, and a sense of custodianship in young Indigenous Australians. We have reached over 400 students so far, and 2015 brings another 175 registrations to the program.
HOW IT WORKS
Rekindling seeks to engage secondary school-age students in regional communities who are passionate about exploring who they are and where they come from through dance.
Participants are first encouraged to research and explore Indigenous storytelling by engaging with the community Elders, who play a pivotal role in guiding the program. Participants also gather inspiration from their surrounding natural environment.
The young dancers are then guided through a series of intensive dance workshops to develop original choreography with Bangarra’s trained dancers. The culmination of this hard work (and play!) is the creation of a new work, performed for family, friends and extended members of the community.
WHY IS YOUR SUPPORT SO VALUABLE?
At the heart of this unique program, Rekindling forges meaningful connections between young participants and the Indigenous community through a reciprocal storytelling experience. This allows creativity to truly take flight and inspire the next generation of dancers!
The ongoing delivery and success of Rekindling wouldn’t be possible without the support of our generous donor community, and we’re grateful every single day.
Your contribution is invaluable – in developing new workshops, by providing participants with access to digital resources, and most importantly, in funding return visits to the regional communities and their Indigenous Elders, extending the meaningful relationships that are forged by the program.
Join Bangarra in empowering the lives of young people in regional Australia by supporting Rekindling today. There is no amount too small, and your contribution does make a difference.
